Phong Nha Cave

7h00: We leave Dong Hoi for Phong Nha Cave, to the west. At Phong Nha, we take a boat trip on the Son River to explore a 1,000-meter stretch of the cave, with its wonderful stalagmites and stalactites and the magnificent grottoes of Bi Ky, Royal Court, Fairy Caves and more, named after the shapes of the stalagmites and stalactites. UNESCO listed Phong Nha Cave as a World Natural Heritage Site in 2003. Then we drive south to the Vinh Moc Tunnels, the refuge of more than 300 North Vietnamese people during six years of bombing. Drive past the Old DMZ, which extended 5 km on either side of the Ben Hai River, from the East Sea to the Laotian border. Then we walk across Hien Luong Bridge over the Ben Hai River, the border between North and South Vietnam from 1954 to 1972. Stop at Doc Mieu Base, part of the McNamara Line, and at Gio Linh Cemetery, with more than 2,000 NVA graves. Drive on to Hue.
